We are receiving an increasing number of requests from people who are researching their relatives and their birthplaces in this area. Unfortunately many of these requests are so complicated or just plain demanding that we are unable to carry out the necessary research ourselves. Therefore we will publish here without charge, any genealogy or local history requests for the Horsted Keynes area. If you can help the enquirer please reply directly to them.

If you would like us to publicise your request for information please send us an email - state first the surname of the family in which you are interested, then summarise what you want to know, finishing with a contact email address. We are asking for requests in this style and order so that the Internet search engines can easily identify your request and thereby make a helpful reply more likely.

Please send requests to webmaster-at-horstedkeynes.com and no other address. If you don't want to publicise your main email address just use one of the easy to get free addresses from yahoo, Hot Mail etc. that you can dispose of when your search is ended. Thank you.

JANE SHERLOCK

Has anyone  seen the grave or heard of the burial site of Jane Sherlock, wife of Lashmer Sherlock, who died about 1810 - 1815 in Horsted Keynes? She was baptised in Horsted Keynes in 1765, the daughter of Thomas and Anne Best.  Lashmer Sherlock died in 1869.

I cannot find any record of her death, so If you come across her date of death, please could you kindly contact me at: email: sciler@hotmail.co.uk

John Martin

I am a descendant of John Martin, born in Horsted Keynes before 26 May 1795. He was the fifth son of Thomas MARTIN died 15 Dec 1829 Horsted Keynes and Sarah CONSTABLE, who also died in Horsted Keynes. 14 Jun 1826.John was convicted of stealing a sheep in 1818 in the Sussex assize and was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life to New South Wales, Australia.

Martin siblings to John include: Thomas MARTIN (1786); Richard MARTIN (1790), Edward MARTIN, (1791) Mary MARTIN, (1797) Martha MARTIN  (1799) Henry MARTIN (1801), Maria MARTIN (1802) all christened in Horsted Keynes, so it seems that the family lived in this community for some time.

John went on to become a respectable and successful farmer in the Paterson area of Australia.

As there were many brothers and sisters of John, I am seeking information as to whether any Martin descendants still living in or around Horsted Keynes today. I am willing to share information about John’s many descendants in Australia should anyone wish for more information.

Thomas Colven

Looking for connections with COLVEN family of Horsted Keynes.

Thomas baptised 1768 in Lindfield. Was a bricklayer. Married Hannah (buried 1 June 1812) then Eleanor Haigh widow, (buried 7 Jan 1836).

Thomas buried 21 Jan 1836 - all in St Giles churchyard. Brother Richard was a glazier, died 1808 with a large tomb in churchyard.

Thomas's son was Charles Crewdson Colven, baptised 9 Feb 1817 in Horsted Keynes, who married Elizabeth Britcher in Dec 1840 in Bromley.

(Where did Crewdson come from??). Family moved to South London.

Thomas's father possibly George and grandfather Richard (buried may 1744 in churchyard) also a bricklayer.

Would be pleased to have any further information on this family. Contact me elaine987@btinternet.com

I`m trying to trace relatives of the Armstrong family lived at Elm cottage Horsted Keynes in the 1960 please contact me at grahamlupton45@googlemail.com

The brother of one of my direct ancestors attended Horsted Keynes (or as he spells it Kaynes) school in 1841.  Through research I believe that he was nine in 1841 and have come across a letter home just before Christmas
"We shall break up on the 24 and the duties of the School will be resumed on the 3 of January 42"
He also confirms that the Ellis's were there at the time as he finishes:
"Mr and Mrs Ellis present their respectful Compliments"
The writer of the letter was a William Gibson and his parents were James and Hannah Gibson.  He had one brother James and five sisters Ann, Harriet, Alice, Hannah and Susan.

My direct ancestor is Alice and I would love to know if she attended this school.  Also I know very little about Williams parents so would love to know if the school has any information on them.
Regards
 Di Oxford

I am trying to find out about the BELLCHAMBERS family from Horsted Keynes. My research has taken me back to a James Bellchambers born around 1716 in Horstead Keynes. I believe his parents were named John Bellchambers and Mary Longley but I have no further details regarding these two. Although I do not know the name(s) of any spouses I do have information regarding 7 children (Ann b.1737, George b.1738, William b.1738, Mary b.1747, Elizabeth b.1748, Francis b.c1761 and James b.c1764) some of which I know were born in Horsted Keynes and others I know were christened in Hartfield. His youngest son James I have as marrying a Mary Hubbard in 1778. I also have possible information regarding a marriage to a Mary Voice. My family descends from this James Bellchambers and eventually moved to Kent but I am looking for any information regarding all branches of the family
